Wellspring · The 1st College Student Cultural Heritage Creative Design Competition

1. The Objective and the Theme:

The Objective of the Competition:

During the two million plus years of human history, from making a stone axe to building a modern city,we have changed our destiny through designs with our unrelenting passion in the quest for beauty. Throughout the 5,000-year history of Chinese civilization, such inspirations have generated a spectacular galaxy of cultural heritage, but these artifacts are currently resting either in museums or in the wilderness, as decaying specimens of the eternal past.

The goal of archaeological exploration is to seek the root and origin of ancient human activities, and all the ancient heritages embodied the ancestors’ design concept and spirit. On the above account, the School of Archaeology and Museology of Peking University launch the“Wellspring Movement”as a bridge for the ancient Chinese culture and contemporary design to unveil these timeless treasures of beauty, to explore designs that integrate traditions and modernity, liberate antiquities, awaken our creativity, and to restore traditions of beauty back to our everyday life.

Today, we are officially launch the “Wellspring: The 1st College Student Cultural Heritage Creative Design Competition”, which is open for all college students to call the concept design and product design based on the root of Chinese cultural heritage. The outstanding designs will be selected and displayed in Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art and Archaeology at Peking University in autumn 2016. Explore the origins and heritage through the lens of history and look to the past for reference to define new standards. For sure, through the process of designing, collecting and selecting sample works for exhibition, and further by preparing and attending the exhibition, together we shall regain a perspective of the past, present and future as well as ourselves.

The Theme of the Competition: The Soul of Chinese Classical Culture

Any design that truly integrates both ancient and modern concepts, will not only cater to the contemporary perceptions of beauty and practical demand, but also cherish a beautiful experience and traditions as carried through the history. For designers, you need to think about: what is the soul of Chinese classical culture? Which quintessence still has more vitality in the contemporary?

That is the theme of this year competition. We hope that every piece of the creative work is based on such thinking. A historical period of ancient China, a living space, a certain art form, a design pattern, a piece of artifact and so on could be chose and analyzed. Please refine their soul to find the most suitable way for their presentation, expression, and apply their souls to our contemporary design.
